REPLACING A WOOD SHAKE ROOF
THE BIGGEST QUESTIONS ARE OFTEN UNDER THE OLD CEDAR.
If your existing cedar roof was installed over spaced boards, the replacement plan needs to address the substrate required by the new system. Do not assume that a material swap is simply a matter of removing wood and fastening composite in its place.
On shaded roofs in neighborhoods such as Wedgwood or around wooded Eastside lots, debris, drainage, and attic conditions also deserve a close look. Dark staining or moss on the surface does not tell the whole story about the roof below it.
Tekline evaluates the roof layout, visible deck conditions, penetrations, flashing, and ventilation needs. Once roofing is removed, any concealed damage or required deck changes should be documented and handled through the agreed scope. For older homes and detailed rooflines, that preparation is as important as selecting the shake color.
ROOF DECK
An older spaced-board substrate may need preparation for the new system.
VENTILATION
Evaluate attic airflow and the roof’s moisture-management needs.
WATER DETAILS
Inspect chimneys, skylights, wall transitions, valleys, and penetrations.
SHAKE LAYOUT
Plan starter courses, field layout, cut edges, hips, and ridges.
